Replacement Front Doors in Stevenage: Composite, uPVC or Aluminium?

Your front door does a lot of work. It keeps the weather out, holds the heat in, protects your family and sets the tone for the whole house. Choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake, which is why so many Stevenage homeowners ask us the same question: composite, uPVC or aluminium?

I’m Lee Webber, and I have been fitting windows and doors for around 30 years. Design A View is FENSA approved and based here in Stevenage, so this guide comes from real installations in local homes, not a brochure. Here is how I help customers choose.

Which front door material suits a Stevenage home?

Stevenage has a real mix of properties. There are plenty of 1950s and 1960s New Town houses, older homes around the Old Town and newer estates. The right door depends on the house, your budget and how much upkeep you are happy to take on.

Composite front doors

Composite doors combine a solid insulated core with a tough GRP skin and a uPVC frame. They look like painted timber but need far less care. They are the door we fit most often, because they balance security, insulation and price so well.

In my experience, composite is the best all-round choice for most family homes. The dense core makes the door feel solid when it closes, and the woodgrain and painted finishes suit both older and modern streets. You can see finished examples in our composite doors portfolio, and our guide to how composite doors improve security for Stevenage families explains the construction in more detail.

uPVC front doors

uPVC is the budget-friendly option. A quality uPVC door is warm, low maintenance and available in a wide range of colours. It suits first homes, rental properties and anyone replacing a worn door without wanting to overspend.

The trade-off is that uPVC doors are lighter and slightly less rigid than composite, so the choice of premium finishes is smaller. Pick a reputable brand with a multipoint lock and it will serve you well for many years. You can read more on our uPVC windows and doors.

Aluminium front doors

Aluminium suits modern homes. The metal is strong enough to allow very slim frames, which gives clean lines and larger glazed areas. Frames can be finished in almost any RAL colour, and the powder coating lasts for decades.

They cost more, but where the door needs to match aluminium windows, an extension or bi-fold doors, the look is hard to beat. Our specialist windows and doors page covers the aluminium systems we install.

How much does a front door cost in Stevenage?

Prices depend on size, glazing, hardware and any building work, so the figures below are typical fitted ranges only.

Door typeTypical fitted priceBest for
uPVC£1,000 to £2,000Tight budgets and easy upkeep
Composite£1,800 to £3,500Security and kerb appeal
Aluminium£3,000 to £6,000Modern homes and slim sightlines

Side panels, fanlights, upgraded handles and disposal of the old frame all affect the final price. The only way to get an accurate figure is a survey, so contact us for a free quote. For wider pricing context, see our guide to new window costs.

Security features worth paying for

A front door is only as secure as its weakest part. When I specify a door, I look for:

  • Multipoint locking, which secures the door at several points along the frame
  • A 3-star anti-snap cylinder, such as TS 007 or Sold Secure Diamond rated
  • Laminated glass in any glazed panels
  • Hinge bolts or hinge protection
  • PAS 24 or Secured by Design certification where the door is available with it

Our article on choosing a front door that combines style, security and smart access goes into these features further.

Energy efficiency and FENSA certification

Replacement doors must meet Building Regulations. As a FENSA approved installer, we can self-certify the work and you receive a FENSA certificate, which a buyer’s solicitor will ask for when you sell.

Look for a door with a U-value of around 1.4 W/m²K or better. Remember that a well-made door in a badly fitted frame still leaks heat, so installation quality matters as much as the product. A properly sealed, level door also stops the draughts and rattles that make older doors so annoying.

What we check on survey day

After 30 years, I see the same problems again and again, and they are worth knowing about before you order:

  • Frames out of square. Older Stevenage homes settle, so the opening is rarely perfectly level.
  • Rotten timber. Old timber sills and sub-frames often need repair before a new door can sit properly.
  • Threshold height. A new threshold can sit higher than the old one, which matters for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
  • Brickwork and plaster. Removing a tired frame can reveal damage that is far cheaper to fix on the day than later.

Telling you about these in advance is what keeps the price honest and the finish tidy.

Choosing your style and colour

Think about the street as well as the house. Anthracite grey and black remain popular, while green, blue and cream suit traditional properties. Decide on glazing early, since a glazed panel brings in light but affects privacy and security. Handles, letterboxes and knockers are small details that change the look completely.

Most like-for-like door replacements do not need planning permission. However, if your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Stevenage Borough Council before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fit a replacement front door?

Most standard replacements take around half a day to a full day, depending on the door, the condition of the opening and any extra work.

Is composite or uPVC better for a front door?

Composite is stronger, heavier and more insulating, so it suits most families. uPVC costs less and is perfectly good where budget is the priority.

Do I need a FENSA certificate for a new front door?

Yes, replacement external doors must comply with Building Regulations. A FENSA approved installer provides the certificate, so you do not need to involve the council directly.

How long do front doors last?

A well-fitted uPVC door typically lasts 20 to 30 years, while composite and aluminium doors often last longer with basic care. Regular cleaning and checking the seals and hardware will help.

Can you fit a door that matches my windows?

Yes. We can match colours and styles across windows and doors, which is especially useful for extensions and full house upgrades.
